The July AIRWAYS is out. I don't have an article in this issue, but if you'd like to read an article by someone who knows a thing or two about the airline industry and aircraft design, you'll enjoy Michael Mannings interview with Gordon Bethune. He's a straight talker who calls a spade a spade.

Before I have to load the computer and get into checklists, let me offer a few clips of wisdom that Mr. Bethune shared with Michael. Here's a hard hitting little piece of insight. "Chapter 11 won't fix your company. It'll fix your balance sheet and restructure things. But if you go into bankruptcy a crummy company and you don't change, you come out a crummy company."

Here's another. "I'm not sure that companies always do what's best for the company. They often do what's best for the incumbents inside the company." Ouch!!

He had this to say about his role as CEO at Continental Airlines. "...my job was to represent Continentals employees and shareholders." No wonder they're such a successful airline today! Here's leadership employees can fall in behind.

Concerning our elected representatives in Washington. "I don't look to Congress to do anything but get re-elected, and whatever that takes they'll do that." I read somewhere else recently that a congressman spends 80% of his/her day in the pursuit of maintaining his/her office. It's a great job, I'd want to keep it too. Hey, maybe I could run for....

There's a lot more interesting reading here, (in fact one of my pictures appears on page 18) but I've got to go now. "Roger, runway 17 via alpha and whiskey, hold short of 12R" "Taxi checklist please."
