I'd just stepped out the door on the jetbridge to head for "Ops" and review our paperwork for our flight to HNL. Not having many Air Canada pictures in my file though, I lingered to shoot this A-320 parked next to us at gate 28 in LAX. Preparing for my next shot, I noticed a 747 in the background. Look hard, you'll see it too. OK, new focus of my attention.

I'm still amazed, each time that I have the opportunity to see one of these machines fly. Now on a short final to runway 24R, this Korean Air -400 is less than 500 feet above the runway threshold.

The Canadian Maple Leaf frames these shots nicely, don't you think?

After a 5,200 nm flight from Seoul, South Korea, this crew is about to touchdown on runway 24R at LAX. That's a long flight!

With a takeoff weight of 910,000 pounds, room for more than 500 passengers, this behemoth lands at 160 mph. In this shot I'm shooting over my own wing as the catering truck approaches. I wonder what my crew meal is today? Oh, I forgot... we don't get those anymore.

This last shot is my favorite. Even from where I was standing on the jetbridge, I could hear the tires (all 18) screeching and screeching and screeching, as smoke trailed towards her tail. Can you imagine the stress on those tires, wheels, trucks and landing gear assembly? And they perform perfectly over and over again! This is a tribute to those who have the capabilty to both design and maintain such equipment. Well, it's time to go, so back to my little "ten wheeler" and we're off. On this HNL layover I had the opportunity to visit the new "Pacific Wings Aviation Museum" on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. Keep an eye out shortly for my report. (It was fabulous.)

Before we start up and taxi out though, I thought that you might like to see what the cockpit of a 747-400 looks like. You probably expected something a little more modern. Just kidding, although a four engine Boeing product it's a little older. Know what it is?

OK, here's a -400 cockpit. Although not a Korean Air airplane, it's typical of this model. I've ridden from the midwest to Narita in this aircraft. The cockpit is spacious and comfortable and the segregated crew bunkroom is directly behind me here.

great cockpit shot of a B-17-
where the h... are the FMS, the EFIS, or the UFC in that cockpit? Someone`s got to update that Flying Fortress`cockpit quickly or she`ll perform really bad into modern airliners arena. I agree with Robert, excelent picture!
I´m sorry, I forgot signing my last comment about cockpit new technologies

Does have a nice Garmin GPS unit though on the dash..what more do you need?

I'm not a pilot but am fascinated by flight, in general. Like you the 747 totally amazes me. I live near KIAH....anytime 747 approaches or departs, I stop what I'm doing and watch.
Hello Walter,
Thanks for leaving a message... it's funny though. If I hadn't gotten involved with airplanes, a locomotive engineer would have been very high on my list. I love old trains and train stations.
